BIRDSALL
What drew you to yoga?
Unexpectedly! I took a yoga course in college on a whim, and I hated how slow and methodical things felt. I couldn’t see myself being still or slow in any way. Then, I gave hot yoga a shot and began to follow certain teachers from studio to studio—hooked on their creativity and the post-yoga peace I’d feel. I never planned to become a teacher, but it makes me feel more like myself. I love sharing different movements and connections now.
Why do you practice?
For longevity. I want to be fluid and flexible as long I can, both in body and mind. I love how different poses and transitions can be challenging depending on the day, and no matter how many times I do the same thing, I have a different experience.
(Life+) How does yoga change you off the mat?
The way I show up for myself on the mat reminds me how I can show up in my day to day. Yoga gives me a moment to myself to see something from every angle before I decide what’s next, and it teaches me patience (which I can always use more of).
What is your style?
In formal terms, my classes have a lot of hatha, Iyengar, and vinyasa elements. I do a lot of Katonah Yoga too, which means my classes include plenty of breathwork and metaphors that connect poses with life outside the studio.
TLDR: playful, curious, and grounded.
Where are you when you’re not teaching?
Ideally somewhere in nature, but if not… then I’m on my couch with my cats, a good book, and coffee.
What illuminates you?
Laughter. Fresh air. A good hug.
