What drew you to yoga?
I found myself in a hot yoga class during college because I was tired of the winter cold and because I wanted to add a flexibility aspect to my volleyball training. Little did I know I was going to a class that had a set sequence and the teacher didn’t demonstrate, so I was a clunky college athlete trying to follow a stranger in front of me. Needless to say, I was lost and could barely balance on two feet let alone one. Even though I chalked that class up as a failure and embarrassment at first, the perfectionist in me wanted to keep trying, so I returned again and again until I became that stranger the newbies followed.
Why do you practice?
As a lifelong athlete, I’ve always been in environments that required me to compete. Yoga has given me a space where I can turn off my competitive mindset and just tune into my body. It’s been a beautiful journey coming to class knowing I won’t be the best and not even caring because I am there to connect to my body and breath and just to be in the moment.
(Life+) How does yoga change you off the mat?
Yoga has given me the ability to breathe through challenges, curb my competitiveness, and show up more fully for my family and friends.
What is your style?
In my classes you’ll quickly see my years of strength/athletic training merge with yoga. You’ll find opportunities to activate muscles you may not have used in a while or find new ways to activate them. My goal is that you’ll feel challenged, but empowered to know once we get out of our heads we are capable of so much.
Where are you when you’re not teaching?
Outside of the studio you’ll usually spot me at the gym, traveling, visiting Columbus’ coffee shops, and best of all being a mom to my three kids
What Illuminates you?
Traveling and seeing the world through the eyes of a child.
