A bold and limitless practice...
sprinkled with a few choice expletives.
What drew you to yoga?
A groupon. I strictly lifted weights at the time and thought I’d be “wasting” an hour “stretching”. Then a beautiful angel named Maria Iannarino walked in the studio and my ego took hit after hit as I could barely stay in downward facing dog without swearing under my breath. I haven’t looked back since.
Why do you practice?
Yoga is my meditation in movement. I can get on my mat for an hour and quiet the constant chatter of my mind that never stops.
(Life+) How does yoga change you off the mat?
Yoga reminds me every single day to just breathe. In yoga, you can always find your way back to the breath. Or, you know - just chill the f*#$ out sometimes, Ashley. Sometimes we are the very reason life feels so hard. Yoga has taught me to (try) to live life with no expectations. It has given me a sense of self-awareness, presence and gratitude to meet life however it comes.
What is your style?
I teach a Power Vinyasa class – connecting the breath to movement while adding in strength poses. I always encourage play (and middle fingers)! We’ll be flowing to playlists filled with Bone Thugs, Biggie and Snoop all while I make really terrible jokes – so don’t take it too seriously - IT’S JUST YOGA.
Where are you when you’re not teaching?
You can probably find me hiking with my dogs, drinking gin on a patio somewhere with my babes, taking classes from all of the amazing teachers I’ve come across in this city, or somewhere stuffing my face with queso. (Fun fact: my body is probably 60% queso at this point).
What illuminates you?
MUSIC. Watching my students gain confidence and strength – not just physically. BREATH. Listening to a room full of beautiful humans breathe together for an hour will NEVER get old.
